THE STORY BEHIND THE ASHIR-UJAH EYE AND KIDNEY CHARITY STOOL
“Restored Hope: A Story of Survival, Faith, and Purpose”
There are moments in life when pain becomes purpose, and a personal battle turns into a beacon of hope for many. Such is the story behind the Ashir-Ujah Eye and Kidney Charity Stool, a vision born from the deep well of suffering, survival, and grace.
The story begins with Very Rev. Fr. Mneuter Clement Ujah, a priest, teacher, and shepherd, who found himself in a storm he never expected. Diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD), a silent but deadly illness, he faced a medical and spiritual battle that would test every fiber of his being. At the brink of despair, with his kidneys failing and the future uncertain, he leaned on faith, family, and the miracle of his encounter with the ever Blessed Virgin Mary and of medical intervention.
After undergoing a life saving kidney surgery, Fr. Ujah emerged not just healed, but transformed. His journey through pain opened his eyes to the silent agony of thousands who suffer from CKD in Nigeria, many without access to diagnosis, treatment, or hope. He saw the faces of the poor who, like him, were battling the disease but lacked the means for survival. These events built up very strong emotions in his heart and soul, making him to also remember how his mother loosed her sight and he didn’t have the means to help her get treatment till she died.
Moved by these plights and guided by divine inspiration, Fr. Ujah made a vow, to turn his survival into service. And so, on the occasion of his 50th birthday ( though February 23rd ) which will be celebrated now on Saturday, May 17th, 2025, he unveils his “ Charity Stool” a legacy project under the Ashir-Ujah Charity Trust. This initiative is more than a foundation; it is a movement of compassion. Its mission is to support, educate, and bring healing to those affected by kidney disease and the gift of sight, particularly the poor and vulnerable in our society.
Through this platform, Fr. Ujah envisions a future where: Awareness is widespread, screenings are accessible, treatments are within reach, and hope is restored to families burdened by kidney and eye diseases.
The Charity stool will engage in public health education, organise community screenings, mark international observances like the Organ Donor Day, and host a National Transplant Games. It will also promote academic research, publish informative materials, and inspire youth led advocacy on kidney, eye health and organ donation.
The Charity Stool which is an initiative to “Restore Hope” echoes the healing ministry of Christ who “went about doing good and healing all who were sick” Matthew 4:23-25). It is a call to action for all of you here and those not physically here to witness this event to partner, to support, and to stand in the gap for the suffering, through your weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly donations. As we celebrate Rev. Fr. Ujah’s golden jubilee, we also celebrate the birth of a vision that will change lives, as we pray for success of this project in Christ Jesus our Lord.
